The Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner is back!

He struggled early and then just when it looked like he was going to come up short Big Brown made a big push for the finish line to win the Haskell Invitational on Sunday at Monmouth Park in New Jersey with a winning time of 1:48 1/5. Coal Play was second with Cool Coal Man coming in third.

Over 44,000 were on hand to watch the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner redeem himself after finishing in last place back in June at the Belmont Stakes.

Big Brown hopes to win from lucky post position 4 with Kent Desormeaux as his jockey.

Big Brown's trainer Rick Dutrow isn't guaranteeing a win by his horse, but he likes the way the colt looks.

"He looks amazing," Dutrow said. "He's shiny, he's happy. He looks as good as he always has."

Owner Michael Iavarone went so far as to say that Big Brown has never looked better.

"We're eagerly anticipating this race," Iavarone said. "If it's possible, he's training better than he did before he won the Kentucky Derby."

Based on his last win at Monmouth on June 14th (the Spend a Buck Stakes), Cool Coal Man is the second choice to win the Haskell Invitational at 4-1.

Horse Racing Industry Under Fire

When Eight Belles suffered a fatal injury at the 2008 Kentucky Derby, everyone gasped in horror. When Big Brown blew away the field at the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, only to finish in dead last at the Belmont Stakes (and effectively killing all hopes of ever seeing another Triple Crown winner anytime soon), horse racing fans everywhere went numb in disbelief.

What was happening to our beloved horses? Where did we go wrong?

Those questions and more will be answered soon when US Congress begins its hearings on the ethics of horse racing.

"When you talk about the Kentucky Derby, Belmont, Preakness, the whole country focuses on those, they attract stars from Hollywood, and it's all pretty romantic and wonderful," says US Rep. Ed Whitfield (R) of Kentucky, who holds hearings Thursday. "But in everyday racing, there are horses going down, and then the horses unable to fulfill their promise going to slaughter. The greed has trumped the concern for the horse, it's trumped the safety of the jockeys, and it's trumped the integrity of the sport."

It will be interesting to see what Congress will learn and take action on as a result of these hearings. Considering the horse racing industry brings in a whopping $40 billion annually, doing away with the sport entirely is an unlikely option.

Belmont Post Positions Drawn: Big Brown is No. 1

More horses have won the Belmont Stakes from the No. 1 post position than any other position at Belmont Park. Let's hope Big Brown makes good on that stat come Saturday.

On Wednesday morning at Belmont Park, the post positions for the highly anticipated Belmont Stakes were drawn, and the good news from Big Brown's stable is that the favorite to win drew the No. 1 post position. Since 1905, there have been more wins from the No. 1 position (23) than any other position.

Big Brown Still the Best

Even with a cracked hoof, Big Brown is still the best horse entered into this weekend's Belmont Stakes. At least, that's what trainer Rick Dutrow is saying.

"There's not any issues with our horse," Dutrow said. "He's right on target. He's by far the best horse in the race."

After undergoing a minor procedure to repair his front left hoof, Big Brown was back on track and ran five furlongs in under a minute.

"He jumped over a big hurdle today," Dutrow said.

Hoof specialist Ian McKinlay will be called back on Friday to make one last repair job to Big Brown's foot, a patch job that will mean a good cleaning and new sutures, along with an acrylic adhesive that will leave the hoof better than new.

"The adhesive that we'll rebuild that wall with is stronger than the hoof itself," McKinlay said.

That being said, the proof will be in the pudding when Big Brown makes his way to the gates at Belmont Park on Saturday afternoon. With the Triple Crown on the line, all eyes will be on the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner to run the race of his life.

Big Brown Healing, Competition Stiffens

With less than two weeks to recover from his recent hoof injury, Big Brown now faces stiff competition in Denis of Cork (pictured) and Casino Drive.

It only took about 10 minutes for hoof specialist Ian McKinlay to repair Big Brown's quarter crack and by all accounts the procedure was a big success.

"A lot of heat had come out from Sunday, which was an excellent sign," McKinlay said. "Probably today he'll be in much better shape. The crack is actually very simple, other than the magnitude of the race. I've done this procedure on horses that have won on the same day.

Big Brown will have his hoof looked at again on Wednesday by McKinlay, who will first clean out the area and replace the stitching. The crack will then be covered by an adhesive and reinforced with a fiberglass patch.

"By today we'll know right where we are," he said. "If the foot cools right out, we'll be extremely close to putting him back together."

Let's hope Big Brown makes a speedy recovery so that he can get in one good breeze before the June 7th Belmont Stakes. Casino Drive has already proven to know his way around Belmont Park; and earlier today Denis of Cork turned in an impressive breeze in preparation for his Belmont Stakes run.

Big Brown Racing to Help New York Family

In an announcement made Friday, the owners of Big Brown have pledged a portion of the thoroughbred's winnings at the Belmont Stakes will go towards helping the family of a policeman who was seriously injured.

Nassau County Police officer Kenneth Baribault was seriously injured in an accident on the Long Island Expressway on May 18th.

"Upon learning of the events of the past week, we the family of Big Brown were deeply saddened, and our prayers obviously go out to the family of the Baribaults," said Big Brown co-owner Michael Iavarone.

"At times like this, it is imperative a community comes together," Iavarone said. "Amongst all the joy and happiness, there is a family in grief -- a family whose officer spends his life taking care of our security. It's imperative that people like us who are in the position we're in now stand up and make something good happen."

Big Brown's jockey, Kent Desmoreaux, will also be getting into the spirit of things by wearing a Nassau County Police department patch on his uniform. (Read the rest of the story on Newsday.com)

Big Brown Set to Win the Triple Crown

Following a huge win at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, Big Brown now has his sights set on the Belmont Stakes and a place in the history books as the first Triple Crown winner in 30 years. Can he do it? If you caught today's Preakness Stakes then you have to believe he's got a darn good shot at it. Big Brown made winning the Preakness look so easy.

"He just set sail," winning jockey Kent Desmoreaux said, "He just kept kicking his legs up and went riding for the wire. There was not a grain of sand in face."

Demoreaux said all he had to do was push the button and just like that Big Brown opened it up and took the race from Macho Again, who placed second, and Icabad Crane, who took third.

When asked if Desmoreaux was nervous going into today's race, here's what he had to say: "I was nervous as nuts!"

The Belmont Stakes is only three weeks away but trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. says his horse will get one breeze and he'll be fresh for the third jewel of the Triple Crown.

With all eyes on the Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown to take the second jewel of the Triple Crown, you may want to intensify the action by getting on a couple of fun Preakness Stakes proposition wagers (or prop bets). Can Derby Winning Jockey Do it Again at Preakness?

In 1998 Kent Desmoreaux rode Real Quiet to victory in the Kentucky Derby and then at the Preakness Stakes. Now in 2008, 10 years later, and he'll be trying to do it again riding Big Brown at the upcoming 2008 Preakness Stakes.

Scheduled to take place at the historic Pimlico Race Course (that's where Sea Biscuit raced War Admiral to victory) on May 17th, the Preakness Stakes won't feature a field of horses nearly as large as the field at the Kentucky Derby but it will be competitive. Where the Derby featured 20 horses, the Preakness will only feature 14. And aside from Big Brown, the only other horse to do both races this year will be Recapturetheglory, who came in fifth place at the Kentucky Derby.

Desmoreaux, however, will be riding the favorite at the Preakness. Big Brown's big show at the Kentucky Derby has made him the one to watch at the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes, and Big Brown's trainer Rick Dutrow says he's good and ready.

"Everything's good here," Dutrow said. "He will go to Belmont after the Preakness. I'll let him hang out at (Bobby) Frankel's barn instead of Aqueduct. I think he should be training at Belmont. Pat Reynolds had him there (last year) and said he really liked the track there."

That being said, now would be a great time to think about betting on the Preakness.

Eight Belles Set to Race from No. 5 Post

With all the pressure on Big Brown, Eight Belles may be the big surprise. You go, girl!

The field for the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby is set, the post positions have been drawn. Holding down the outside position, Big Brown is the 3/1 morning line favorite heading into this weekend's big race. But over in the No. 5 position will be the only filly set to race in the Kentucky Derby: Eight Belles. Undefeated this year in four starts, including victories in the Fantasy, Honeybee and Martha Washington Stakes, Eight Belles should give bettors good value at 15/1 odds to win. If she does win, Eight Belles will become only the fourth filly to win the Kentucky Derby. Regret won it in 1915, Genuine Risk took it in 1980, and the last filly to win the Kentucky Derby was Winning Colors in 1988.

Nick Zito - Zee Man to Beat?

With three top 20 Kentucky Derby contenders headed to Churchill Downs on May 3, Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito has a pretty good shot at taking another Derby trophy home this year (he's already got two).

Reigning 2-year-old champion War Pass and Fountain of Youth winner Cool Coal Man both have earned their way into the running and both have a fair shot at winning; and then there's Anak Nakal, winner of the Kentucky Jockey Club last fall at Churchill, who also remains on the list of top Kentucky Derby nominees.

And to think Zito began his career as a hot walker. (A hot walker is someone who walks horses post-exercising or post-race.) Zito's first big win was the 1990 Grade 1 Wood Memorial Stakes, and then that same year he earned a second place finish in the Belmont Stakes. In addition to two Derby wins, Zito has also won the Preakness and Belmont Stakes once each.

As a testament to his life's work within the horse racing industry, Zito was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2005 (that year his horses took in more than $8 million in purses).

Betting on the Final Four - NCAA Tournament

And you thought you were on pins and needles, waiting for this weekend's Final Four games. North Carolina junior Tyler Hansbrough can think of nothing else.

"It means a lot," said Hansbrough, who admits he's having one heck of a time lately trying to get any sleep; he keeps thinking about the upcoming game. "It's a goal we set out. Obviously, we beat some good teams to get here and we feel like we're playing really well. We want to keep on moving."

LeBron James Vogue Cover Controversy

King James or King Kong?

NBA forward LeBron James doesn't have a problem with this cover, but ESPN columnist Jemele Hill does.

"A black athlete being reduced to a savage is, sadly, nothing new. But this cover gave you the double-bonus of having LeBron and Gisele strike poses that others in the blogosphere have noted draw a striking resemblance to the racially charged image of King Kong enveloping his very fair-skinned lady love interest."

James, who plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers, told The Plain Dealer he was cool with the cover, saying he was "just showing a little emotion."

"Everything my name is on is going to be criticized in a good way or bad way," James told the paper. "Who cares what anyone says?"

Photographed by legendary photog Annie Leibovitz, the cover is set to make a splash on the newsstands later this week, if it isn't already available in your area. (I'm thinking collector's item.)

NCAA Tournament Results - Second Round Update & Scores

My March Madness bracket took a brutal beating yesterday. (First Round results here). How's yours shaping up?

If you've been frantically piecing together your NCAA Tournament bracket following yesterday's upsets, take comfort in knowing you are not alone. My West Region looks like it was hit by a freak tornado, but my Midwest Region is all but demolished. (Gonzaga??) And things are not looking any better for today.

Earlier this afternoon West Virginia upset Duke 73-67 in Second Round action. Joe Alexander had 22 points and 11 rebounds for West Virginia, and Alex Ruoff finished with 17 points and six rebounds.

Not a good time for Duke to fall short on nailing those all-important three-pointers, especially when West Virginia found a way to bring their A game to the hardwood during the second half, when it mattered most.

Kentucky Derby Contenders: Colonel John

Kentucky Derby Contenders: Z Fortune

He didn't win today's Rebel Stakes, but Z Fortune is still very much in the running for May's big race.

“We felt this was the best plan for the horse," said trainer Steve Asmussen. "From an education standpoint, we want two [more] races instead of one before the [Kentucky] Derby.”

With Denis of Cork out, Z Fortune was a Rebel Stakes favorite but failed to pose as much of a threat in this all-important race. Prior to this loss, Z Fortune’s only loss in four lifetime starts came to stablemate and Kentucky Derby favorite Pyro in the $300,000 Grade 3 Risen Star Stakes. The Rebel is Oaklawn’s final major prep for the $ 1 million Grade II Arkansas Derby on April 12.

March 3rd??? This means that the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament -- AKA March Madness -- is only two weeks and one day away! Okay, I've got a "to do list" based on my terrible picks and performances in prior years.

Breeders' Cup Classic Contenders

After a thrilling round of preliminaries, the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Monmouth Park on Oct. 27 is shaping up to be some horse race. Curlin became the latest horse who will head into the race on a winning note. After a disappointing summer, he sprung back to life with a narrow win over the favorite, Lawyer Ron, in yesterday’s Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont, which put him in position to claim the 3-year-old championship and the Horse of the Year title in the Classic.

But his next assignment will not be easy. The field for the $5 million Classic will be loaded with talented horses like Street Sense, Hard Spun, Tiago, Any Given Saturday and Lawyer Ron. “We’ll all meet again in a month’s time, probably to decide a lot of honors,” the winning trainer, Steve Asmussen, said after the Gold Cup.

Some 24 hours before Curlin’s win, Hard Spun won a rematch of the one-two finishers from the Kentucky Derby when he edged Street Sense in the Kentucky Cup Classic at Turfway Park. But Street Sense, the Derby winner, ran well in defeat. Then there is Tiago, who jumped into the Classic picture Saturday when defeating older horses in the Goodwood at Santa Anita. It may turn out that Any Given Saturday is the best of the bunch. He has won three in a row, including the Brooklyn on Sept. 22. Lawyer Ron is his stablemate, and still another Classic contender.

In the Gold Cup, Lawyer Ron, ridden by John Velazquez, took over from the pace-setter Brother Bobby near the top of the stretch and had a half-length lead with a furlong left. Curlin, fourth down the backstretch, wore down Lawyer Ron to win by a neck. He paid $6.20 on a $2 bet to win.

Preakness Odds: Hard Spun Humble, All Heart

All eyes may be on Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense to take the 2007 Preakness Stakes, but handicappers should not dismiss Hard Spun's chances

Racing 1 1/4 miles for the first time on May 5, Hard Spun finished second in the 2007 Kentucky Derby. But ask owner Rick Porter if he's okay with having his horse listed as one of the favorites in Saturday's Preakness Stakes and he'll tell you he's not particularly keen on the idea.

"The only thing that worries me is everyone's too high on the horse, thinking that everything's setting up perfectly for him in the Preakness," Porter told reporters Tuesday. "We have a lot of work to do to win this race. We've got some good horses to beat. That's what worries me because I like to be the underdog."

And ask anyone who has met this long-legged three-year-old beauty and they'll tell you that he's simply too nice to win.

"He's just an extremely nice horse. There's not an aggressive bone in his body," said Hard Spun's trainer Larry Jones. "The other riders that see us, they say, 'That's Hard Spun?' They can't believe it. I told them, in his next career, he thinks he's going to be a trail-riding horse. He's almost people!"

2007 Preakness Stakes Odds at Bodog Racebook

As of Tuesday only four horses are listed as Preakness contenders (Curlin, Hard Spun, Imawildandcrazyguy and Street Sense), at least 11 horses are expected to make their way to the gate for this year's big race at Pimlico. Street Sense remains the Preakness odds favorite after his astonishing come-from-behind victory in the Kentucky Derby, but Hard Spun can hardly be ruled out as serious threat.

Will Todd Pletcher Have a Derby Winner in 2007?

Veteran trainer Todd Pletcher has lot of horse racing wins under his belt, and is currently the 2007 earnings leader with nearly $8 million dollars in earnings.

One important victory, though, has eluded him: the Kentucky Derby. Despite coming close with two second-place finishes -- with Bluegrass Cat to Barbaro last year, and with Invisible Ink behind Monarchos in 2001 -- he has never finished the Road to the Roses with a horse in first place.

Steve Asmussen is the trainer of odds-on (and much hyped) favorite Curlin, and Carl Nafzger is the trainer for many handicappers' pick, Street Sense. So without the two top-ranked horses, what has Pletcher got going for him? A record tying five Kentucky Derby entries, all of them contenders.

Here's the horses he'll be saddling, in their post order, with their current odds:

(6) Cowtown Cat - 25/1
(13) Sam P. - 25/1
(14) Scat Daddy - 9/1
(16) Circular Quay - 9/1
(18) Any Given Saturday - 14/1

Circular Quay may be Pletcher's best hope. He's already posted an win at Churchill Downs in the Grade 3 Risen Star Stakes, and is heading into the Derby coming off a 2 1/4-length win in Grade 2 Louisiana Derby. Pletcher is pleased with his last workout at Keeneland, where he breezed five-eights in 1:00:20, and at post position 16 Circular Quay may be able to break out around the turn. Not in his favor, at least historically, is the horse's eight-week layoff.

Scat Daddy is another good prospect for Pletcher. With an impressive record of 5-1-1, and has already proven himself against fellow Derby contenders Stromello and Nobiz Like Showbiz in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes. The horse breezed five furlongs in 1:00 4/5 with jockey Edgar Prado.

The fastest recent five furlong run for a Pletcher horse, though, was delivered by Any Given Saturday, who zipped 5/8 of a mile in 00:58 4/5. He finished third, however, behind Nobiz Like Shobiz and Sightseeing in the Grade 3 Wood Memorial Stakes on 7 April.

I'm sure Pletcher doesn't care much which horse takes the Derby on Saturday, though -- as long as it's one of his.

Kentucky Derby Contender Roundup (Non-Curlin Edition)

The latest Kentucky Derby odds give Arkansas Derby winner Curlin the favorite spot at 3/1. There's so much hype surrounding this undefeated (in only three races) 3-year-old (who did not race as a 2-year-old) that I thought I'd have a look at the other leading contenders in this year's Road to the Roses.

Street Sense
Current odds: 6/1 - Racing record: 3-2-2 - Earnings: $1,508,200

While the "racing record" portion above may not indicate greatness, Street Sense has never finished below third in his six lifetime starts. He had a final workout on Tuesday at Churhill Downs, breezing five furlongs in 1:01 with jockey Calvin Borel aboard. Won the Eclipse Award for champion 2-year-old male, receiving 229 of 271 votes. Don't count this horse out of the running by any stretch (back or otherwise) of the imagination.

Circular Quay
Current odds: 7/1 - Racing record: 4-2-0 - Earnings: $1,147,434

Just the fact this horse is under the tender training care of racing legend Todd Pletcher should make you take notice (and perhaps more so because he has the most Derby starts without a win -- surely the odds are working in his favor?). Circular has already won at Churchill Downs (Bashford Manor Stakes, G. 3), and led from start to finish in the Hopeful Stakes (G. 1). Worked Sunday with jockey Angel Cordero, and Pletcher said he "looked awesome".

Nobiz Like Shobiz
Current odds: 8/1 - Racing record: 4-1-1 - Earnings: $804,900

Hasn't made as much as the other horses listed here; while he glided to an easy victory in his first start at the Holy Bull Stakes (G. 3), disappointed with his third place finish at the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G. 2) -- both at Gulfstream Park. Zipped five furlongs at Belmont Park in under a minute (0:59.98). Can he keep up the pace when he's shipped to Churchill Downs on Wednesday?

Even a quick look at these horses show that we've got a horse race for this year's Derby, even if the word on everyone's lips is "Curlin".

Mike Scioscia readies Angels

So much for being road warriors, San Francisco tries to shake its current rep for being road patsies along with its four-game road losing skid at Minute Maid Park.

Houston has been struggling of late, winning just three of their past 10 games. They have averaged just 4.5 runs per game during this stretch and getting 8.9 hits per game. For the season, they are 22-16 facing a San Francisco team carrying a 18-20 record.

The Astros (22-16) opened as 160 favorites and they host a Giants team that has won 18 of their 38 games this season. The total opened at 9.

Felipe Alou's troops hosted Los Angeles last game and came away with a 6-3 loss, a game that went over 8. Oddsmakers had them as favorites in that one.

Phil Garner's troops were at home against the Rockies last game and came away with a 3-0 win, a game that went under 9. Oddsmakers had them as favorites.

Expect San Francisco to be tough at the plate and not sink themselves by striking out a lot. The Giants batters are in the top three in the league, fanning just 5.1 times per game.

Well the Winter Olympics are here and I can hardly contain my enthusiasm (sarcasm). I was looking at different polls online today that talked about people's overall attitude towards the Olympics but more specifically the Winter Olympics and it seems that people just don't care.

One of the majour reason people don't show much interest, is because they never played the sport. That being said its not shocking hockey and figure skating tend to be the most popular sports at the Olympics.

I know their are many other stories surrounding the Olympics, and a couple particular members or coaches specifically but I wont be talking about that on here. I feel sorry for icon players they spend their whole lives with the bulk of the population looking for their flaws. I really don't understand why people love tearing down their hero's, but I assure you that will never be me!

Steelers Win Tainted

I am still in shock after that terrible display of referring I witnessed Sunday afternoon. I am not a conspiracy theorist but I really don't know how to explain what happened to the Superbowl this year.

Was it a simple fact that the referring group wanted to see Jerome lift the trophy over his head or was it something more complex. I hope it was just a matter of a personal biased and not something more, but I think this is something the NFL cannot assume and should spend some time investigating. Now whether they investigate or not we will never know. If they find out something they don't want to know, we the loyal fans will never know.

All we ask is that it is fixed. I am not a diehard Seahawks fan, to all of you who are I apologize. It was difficult for me to swallow I can just imagine how hard it would have been for you. If the NFL does not get this under control they will loose a lot of fans to scandal much like MLB did not to many years ago.

Coyotes edge Kings in Shootout

Get Rid of the Ball

I think one of the keys to Sundays football matchup will be Hasselbeck getting the ball out quick and not trying to make something out of nothing. The Steelers linebackers are going to be coming hard on Sunday and a quick passing game will slow them down considerably.

I would not be surprised at all if they come out showing blitz then drop back in the flats to disrupt the overall game plan of the Seattle Seahawks, but we will see. I just hope Matt can bounce back after what I'm sure is at least one inevitable interception.

I will be following the Seattle spread all week to get the very best bet I can FIND.

Seattle No Underdog

Most football fans aren't giving the Seahawks a chance going into Sundays game against the Steelers, I think a big part of that is the role the Steelers have been on lately knocking off the top three seaded teams in the AFC.

What most people forget is that the Seahawks have been on a role of their own lately. If you overlook the last game of the season against the Packers the Seahawks are on a 14 game winning streak, not a bad way to be entering into the biggest game of their lives.

Ohio State Highway Patrol is gearing up for the anticipated Black-and-Gold caravan, but insists it has nothing to do with the fact that the Steelers beat both teams during the regular season.

What a great post to be able to start my blog, superbowl betting. Superbowl is indeed the pinacle of online sports betting. It's the biggest and most watched NFL game of the year. It's the highlight of the year for every NFL junkie.
